Opinion: Kanye West – The Power behind the Buzz

Co-signed by Shev on Jun 10 2010

I’mma talk shit until I’m outta hits (Brand New)

And that’s exactly what Kanye West will do given his chart performances, so it’s best that you get used to it.

Rumored to be titled Good Ass Job, Kanye’s next album is once again taking a detour from his last one, 808s & Heartbreak. He has given very little information about it, and then Power leaked on Memorial Day weekend, exploding internet browsers and speakers worldwide.

Listen to Kanye West – Power

We will get back to the 5th album talk. Kanye should teach a Promotion 101 class because whenever he prepares to release an album, there’s always a major buzz surrounding it.

Kanye was joined by Lupe and Common to perform for high school students in Chicago on June 8

Let’s break the album buzzes down:

The College Dropout (February 10, 2004)
At this point, Kanye was known for his work on Jay-Z’s classic The Blueprint. He released some great mixtapes and featured some hot verses, but he was still being doubted as an MC. He had to show that he could match his producing capabilities. 10 Grammy nominations later and 3 wins, I think we got the answer. The album is considered a classic by many.

Late Registration (August 30, 2005)
You cannot drop a classic and expect not to have the world waiting on your next project. He enlists Jon Brion who is a composer not familiar with hip hop, as a co-producer. There is also talk of orchestration type beats. With the success that he’s had with his trademark sampling sound, it could have been easily duplicated with Late Registration, but Kanye decided to reinvent himself with just the second album and it paid off. Strong first week sales, perfect scores from L.A. Times, Rolling Stone and USA Today and more Grammy wins proved that Kanye was here to stay.

Graduation (September 11, 2007)
This is the album that started to frustrate the hip hop heads. Electro beats, synths, an Elton John sample aren’t exactly what some of Kanye’s fans were expecting from Late Registration‘s follow up. On the other hand, some other fans had figured that Kanye does not follow the same formula and trusted his artistic shift. If that wasn’t enough to create a major buzz, he announced that he was releasing it on the same day as 50 Cent and that became the biggest news in the music industry that summer. Kanye ended up selling more, and the album transformed him into a worldwide superstar, in part due to the smash hit Stronger.

808s& Heartbreak (November 25, 2008)
While Graduation created some confusion for the hip hop heads, 808s drove them away. This album completely divided Kanye fans. He wasn’t rapping, he used auto-tune, the songs were very dark and once again completely different from what Kanye fans had grown close to. Premiering the lead single Love Lockdown at the VMAs created an insane curiosity for music lovers. During an episode of BET’s 106 & Park, Kanye announced that it took three weeks to record the album and it would be released pretty soon. The video for Love Lockdown had its debut on Ellen Degeneres’ talk show. A few weeks later, he gave a preview of Heartless at the Democratic National Convention while campaigning for then Senator Obama. Fast forward to its release, the album posted great first week numbers given the risk taken by Kanye.

Untitled 5th album/ Good Ass Job (TBA/September 2010)
This is Kanye’s return to rap and many are wondering if he still has the lyrical ability that gained him many fans with the first three albums. He has kept very quiet about this album while recording in Hawaii. Whenever an artist announced their departure to Hawaii, it was automatically assumed that it was for Kanye’s project. Those who had a chance to work on or even hear the album took to their Twitter page to get the public excited. Devo Springsteen who co-produced Late Registration‘s leading single Diamonds are Forever, called the album inspiring. Pete Rock and the RZA are also working on it. It seems that Kanye is taking it back to old school rap with hard beats and rhymes. DJ Semtex, who interviews Kanye right before each album release, heard the material and was sworn to secrecy. Drake declared that it would be one of hip hop’s best albums in the past decade. Kanye announced that the 4th album would be called Good Ass Job a couple of years ago, but unforeseen circumstances led him to deliver 2008′s brilliant 808s & Heartbreak. To this day, there hasn’t been any confirmation of the 5th album’s title. The lead single Power leaked over Memorial Day Weekend and it was performed in Chicago for Kanye’s 3rd annual Stay in School Program. He’s also set to make his big comeback televised performance at the BET Awards on June 27.

I embody every characteristic of the egotistic (Power)

There’s the Kanye we know, welcome back.
